Coca-Cola Germany pilots multipacks without plastic film

According to Coca-Cola Germany, together with their bottling partner Coca‑Cola Europacific Partners, the company announced the start of testing their new multipack solution without plastic film. This innovative secondary packaging design replaces the packaging film on large PET multipacks with adhesive dots and a recyclable cardboard handle.

As stated by Coca-Cola Germany the approach is being tested as part of the company's efforts to reduce packaging waste and improve recyclability. The pilot project, which is being conducted at PENNY in selected stores in Germany, is designed to test the feasibility, consumer acceptance, and performance of our packaging.

The innovative packaging concept will be used for Coca-Cola Original and Coca-Cola Zero in the 6 x 1.25-liter format. The new concept is part of a broader portfolio of secondary packaging solutions in Europe, including KeelClip™, LitePacTop, and CanCollar®.

How it works:

  1. Adhesive dots are strategically placed to hold the bottles together, while a sturdy, recyclable cardboard handle makes carrying the multi-packs easy, providing the same functionality.
  2. The packaging was designed for stability and portability. Extensive testing has proven the adhesive dots safe during transport and on-shelf handling. Consumer feedback will be closely monitored as part of the in-store pilot project.
  3. Since adhesive dots are a relatively new experience for many consumers, simple instructions for separating the bottles are provided as part of in-store marketing until this becomes intuitive over time.

According to Coca-Cola Germany the bottles can be gently twisted or pulled apart using the adhesive points. In-store communication and simple graphics on the packaging provide customers with guidance and explanations. The handle is made of recyclable cardboard, so it can be disposed of in the normal paper/cardboard recycling after the bottles have been removed. The bottles can be recycled like any conventional PET bottle by returning them to a reverse vending machine.
