For the first time, more than 3 billion cans and bottles were returned for a deposit refund in Sweden in 2025, which is 130 million more than the previous year. This equates to just over 8 million cans and bottles being returned every day. The return rate — the proportion of sold packaging that is returned — has also risen to 88.4 per cent, approaching the national target of 90 per cent. These figures are from Pantamera/Returpack.

“We at Pantamera would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who returns their bottles and cans. Every can and bottle makes a difference, and all the material can be recycled into new ones, which is good for the climate. It's a small environmental action in everyday life that, when combined, has a big impact. That’s why we often say that returning bottles is Sweden’s smallest climate movement.” says Katarina Lundell, Head of Marketing and Communications at Pantamera/Returpack.

The deposit is becoming increasingly important. On average, 283 cans and bottles were returned per person in 2025, which is a 4 per cent increase on the previous year. At the same time, the return rate increased to 88.4 per cent.

According to a survey conducted by Kantar/Sifo on behalf of Pamantera/Returpack, 84 per cent of Swedes say they have a high level of confidence in the deposit-refund system. The survey also shows that people are motivated to return bottles by a desire to benefit the climate, but that the refund itself is becoming increasingly important.

‘We are delighted that confidence in the Swedish deposit-refund system is so high. Combined with the fact that the deposit amount has increased, this puts us in a strong position to achieve a 90 per cent return rate,” says Katarina Lundell.

Since the scheme began, 55 billion containers have been returned. Initially, people could only return one container at a time, but bulk return machines, which allow whole sacks of returnable containers to be emptied in one go, are becoming increasingly common. These machines are popular, as evidenced by the increased volume of returnable containers collected in areas where they are installed.

“We are constantly developing the deposit system to make it even easier to return bottles and cans. The easier it is, the more cans and bottles will be collected and recycled into new, returnable packaging,” says Katarina Lundell.
