RETAL has strengthened its position as a trusted packaging partner to global beverage brands with the addition of ThisCapTM to its portfolio of sustainable solutions. Through a newly signed license agreement, RETAL now offers customers reliable access to this advanced design slitting pattern, combining production efficiency with consumer convenience and regulatory compliance.

ThisCapTM is a ‘hold-open tethered closure’ developed by ThisCap Inc., now a part of SACMI Group, to meet the requirements of the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD), which makes tethered caps mandatory on all single-use beverage bottles up to three litres. Beyond compliance, this closure has been engineered for an intuitive, comfortable consumer experience, as it remains firmly attached to the bottle, opens smoothly, and recloses securely.

Maria Jarrar, RETAL Senior Marketing Manager EU & US, says, “RETAL’s long-term relationship with SACMI and this addition of ThisCapTM aligns with our shared customer- focused innovation strategy. We can supply this wide-angle opening closure to our global brand owner customers across all our active markets and are happy to talk to anyone that would like to know how ThisCapTM will suit their products. We are pleased to add ThisCapTM to our portfolio as it delivers a perfect balance of compliance and comfort.”

Meeting evolving market needs

The introduction of ThisCapTM reflects RETAL’s ongoing commitment to providing its customers with flexible and sustainable solutions as beverage packaging transitions to next-generation neck finishes and lighter weights.

In close collaboration with SACMI and its team of technical specialists, RETAL has launched production of ThisCapTM Hold-Open (TCHO) closures on its advanced compression-moulding lines, using post-processing slitting technology for the 1.3 g water cap format. The design’s robust hinge and practical geometry make it easy to handle on standard capping equipment, while ensuring the cap stays conveniently out of the way when opened.

Anton Sugoniaev, RETAL’s Head of R&D, explains that expanding the company’s tethered cap range is a natural next step, “Our customers expect options and we’re

happy to deliver. We’ve made sure we can support every major neck finish and closure style with verified performance and easy implementation. We in R&D have worked with the SACMI development team to adapt premium tether solutions to our closure designs and best integrate ThisCapTM into our production, maintaining efficiency and quality while adding a new option to our sustainable closures range.”

Meeting sustainable expectations

By licensing SACMI’s ThisCapTM technology, RETAL expands its range of lightweight, high-performance closures that meet regulatory requirements while reducing environmental impact. The hold-open tethered design keeps the cap attached to the bottle, significantly lowering litter risk, and its lightweight 1.3 g format cuts material use and transport emissions without compromising robustness or usability.

RETAL’s investment in tethered cap capacity also strengthens its regional supply capabilities across Europe and beyond, ensuring that global key accounts can adopt compliant closures without disruption. The addition of ThisCap complements RETAL's existing DH2 slitting pattern and L-tether (patented geometry for closures with injected tamper evidence bands, for application on various neck finishes popular across the beverage industry. Jarrar notes, “Strong relationships rely on collaboration to create reliable, scalable results for brand owners,” adding that ThisCapTM is particularly valued by water, CSD, and juice producers seeking a balance between sustainability, functionality, and consumer appeal.

The relationship between SACMI and RETAL demonstrates how collaboration across the value chain can deliver smarter, more sustainable packaging. ThisCapTM brings together SACMI’s expertise and RETAL’s industrial capability, resulting in a solution that is ready for today’s markets and tomorrow’s expectations.
