  • With the Elion 3200 CAP, Netstal is presenting an all-electric high-performance solution to produce beverage closures for the first time.
  • At this year's Fakuma, the machine will produce 26 mm closures on a 72-cavity mold in a cycle time of 1.8 seconds.
  • In the future, the modernized Elion modular system will offer customers the choice between fully electric and hybrid configurations in the clamping force range from 1,200 to 4,200 kN.

The Elion 3200 CAP celebrates its premiere at Fakuma. With the new all-electric configuration, Netstal is expanding the Elion series with a powerful and energy-efficient solution for the high-performance production of beverage closures. The combination of the newly developed clamping unit with 3,200 kN and the new electric injection unit 2000 is designed for short cycle times, high process stability, maximum availability and energy efficiency. True to the principle of "technology follows application", customers will be able to choose between hybrid and all-electric configurations in the clamping force range of 2,200 to 4,200 kN in the future.

At Fakuma, Netstal will be showing the new Elion 3200 CAP in an application to produce beverage closures. The all-electric injection molding machine from Netstal, together with the 72-cavity mold from Z-MOULDS and the hot runner system from MHT, forms the basis for highly productive production of 26 mm HDPE closures. The shot weight is 72g. With a cycle time of 1.8 seconds, the production line impressively demonstrates the performance of the entire system. The material is provided by TotalEnergies. Piovan takes care of the material preparation. The downstream equipment with cooling conveyor, bunker and optical quality inspection comes from IMDvista. The chiller is provided by ef cooling.

"Our new all-electric solution achieves the high dynamics required for closure production. At the same time, our customers benefit from high energy efficiency, process stability and availability, and thus from clear competitive advantages," says Renzo Davatz, CEO at Netstal.

Optimized clamping unit increases availability

The optimized geometry of the toggle lever enables the shortest dry cycle times, and the optimized force application ensures greater stiffness of the clamping plate. This increases stability and contributes to a long service life of the electric clamping unit. Ease of maintenance was another development focus. The newly designed protective cover can also be installed quickly and has smooth, easy-to-clean surfaces. Depending on your needs, the ejector can be chosen to be electric or hydraulic. Automatic grease lubrication is available as an option. It lubricates the linear guides of the clamping unit and the injection unit as well as the ejector guide of the clamping unit automatically and regularly during operation. This reduces maintenance interruptions and extends the service life of the guides.

Electric injection with high precision and dynamics

The completely newly developed electric injection unit 2000 offers numerous customer advantages. The screw stroke is 260 mm; depending on the screw diameter, the unit achieves an injection pressure of up to 2,400 bar. The optimally coordinated injection dynamics enable short injection times and open up a wide range of applications in closure and packaging production as well as in medical technology. Synchronously controlled injection spindles ensure particularly symmetrical load distribution. This reduces mechanical stress and contributes to a long service life of the injection unit. As an exclusive feature of Netstal technology, the pressure changeover during injection is force-dependent and works independent of the material properties. The result is highest precision and shot weight consistency even with very fast cycle times.

Energy-efficient, user-friendly and networkable

The Elion has also been further optimized in terms of its energy efficiency. The electric injection and the highly efficient servo drives reduce energy requirements and thus energy costs as well as the associated CO₂ emissions. Intelligent load distribution and an optimized feed-in concept enable further energy savings of up to 5 percent. This relieves the grid and increases its resilience to short-term power outages and grid fluctuations.

The Axos 9 controller combines a high degree of flexibility in application development with safe and intuitive operation in everyday production. Separate touchscreens and haptic controls support the programming and operation of the machine. The integrated Smart Operation feature guides operators through predefined procedures, reducing the risk of input errors. Standardized interfaces based on OPC UA enable efficient networking with higher-level control systems and peripheral components. Thanks to HTML5 integration, even complex system components can be integrated into the machine control system.

Electric or hybrid: the application is decisive

"For us, electric and hybrid drive concepts are not competing technologies, but complementary technologies. The decisive factor is which solution best meets the requirements of the respective application, both technically and economically. That's why we will continue to offer our customers both technologies in the future," explains Davatz.

Netstal is currently gradually converting the Elion series to a new platform. Since 2025, clamping units with 1,200 and 1,750 kN as well as the electric injection units 270 and 530 have been available. This is followed by the clamping units with 3,200 and 4,200 kN as well as the electric injection unit 2000. A clamping unit with 2,200 kN and the new 940 electric injection unit are planned for the summer of 2027. The tried-and-tested hybrid injection units from 450 to 4200 will remain part of the portfolio. Up to a clamping force of 4,200 kN, the Elion can be configured hybrid or fully electric.
