MacroCycle Technologies and Meta signed an agreement under which Meta will purchase environmental attribute certificates (EACs) linked to recycled PET polymer produced at MacroCycle’s first commercial plant in the Southeastern U.S. Companies purchase EACs to drive demand for lower-carbon materials, address emissions from plastics in their supply chains, and help scale and finance early-stage manufacturing.
MacroCycle, a U.S. manufacturer, will generate third-party verified EACs by producing recycled PET (rPET) — a lightweight plastic commonly used in packaging and textiles. MacroCycle’s novel chemical recycling approach turns waste-grade PET into low-carbon, high-value material capable of replacing fossil-fuel based PET. For Meta, this is one avenue to address emissions from plastics in its supply chain.
The agreement supports MacroCycle scaling up production for recycled PET in the U.S. market, starting with their first commercial plant in the Southeastern U.S., anticipated to produce 5,000 tonnes of recycled PET plastic annually. The plant will scale the company’s proprietary SolvoGenesis™ platform, a solvent-based process that dissolves, purifies, and upcycles PET from mixed and contaminated plastic waste that conventional mechanical recycling cannot handle. Meta’s multi-year EAC agreement provides the long-term product demand MacroCycle needs to finance plant construction.
