More Sustainable White Opaque PET Bottles
Karsten Schulz, Business Development Director Polymers
Omya developed a solution, called Omya Smartfill, that can replace 50-70% of titanium dioxide in mono-layer PET milk bottles with high light barrier.
Omya Smartfill has a significant lower carbon footprint than titanium dioxide and reduces energy consumption due to less UV-light reflection.
Omya Smartfill provides the same mechanism as it is known from the production of white opaque BOPP labels since decades where minerals are causing in the stretched film micro-voids that make the film appear white. In PET it was so far not possible to use calcium carbonate as it causes polymer degradation. Omya`s innovation is a modification on the mineral surface, that improves the compatibility with PET.
Bottles made with Omya Smartfill can be recycled in a closed loop, are NIR detectable and fulfil the requirements of EUBP.

Finding PEF’s Place in the Circular Value Chain
Ingrid Goumans, Director Public Affairs – ESG
On the brink of commercial market introduction, PEF has the potential to help brand-owners with their ambitious targets. Due to PEF’s superior properties, PEF can reduce the weight of packaging, improve the shelf life, and is fully recyclable. Furthermore, PEF is 100% plant-based, making it a perfect fit for a circular economy.

However, the introduction of a new material also brings the complexity of setting up a dedicated recycling stream, and/or receiving allowance to enter an existing recycling stream.
How do we ensure that innovative materials can enter the market in a circular manner and accelerate the transition towards a circular fossil-free economy?

How to Unlock a Circular Future for PET in Europe
Eric Dehouck, Executive Managing Director, Eastman Circular Solutions France
This presentation explores the opportunities to unlock a sustainable future for PET within a circular economy framework. It highlights the challenges of plastic waste and foster a complementary approach of recycling technologies in optimizing both feedstocks and product output. The discussion emphasizes the importance of fostering collaboration and alignment among the industry stakeholders, ensuring traceability and quality assurance, and adapting to evolving demand and regulatory landscapes. By examining current trends and advocating for a cohesive ecosystem, the discussion aims to inspire actionable solutions that promote the effective reuse and recycling of PET, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable circular future.
