Last year, Gneuss Kunststofftechnik GmbH (Bad Oeynhausen, Germany) already received a Letter of Non Objection for a complete PET recycling system including an SSP system. Now, the company has set a new milestone: it has received unrestricted FDA approval for food packaging products of all types (classes C – G) for its extrusion process.

As Managing Director, Dr. Stephan Gneuss proudly explained: “The FDA approval for the processing of up to 100 % PET bottle flakes only using an extruder – without any pre- or post- extrusion treatment of the material is a unique selling point. For us, it is the best proof that with the MRS extruder, we have successfully created a real innovation”. The fact that Gneuss has already sold more than 20 extruders for many diverse applications since its market launch less than 4 years ago, illustrates how Gneuss has been able to convince a large number of customers in a very short time.

This new FDA approval means that the MRS extruder, its devolatilising system and the Rotary Melt Filtrations System are approved for the processing of up to 100 % unwashed PET bottle flakes for food contact containers. This is achieved without the need for any treatment of the material before or after it is processed on the extruder (no drying, no drying under vacuum, no crystallizing etc.).

These excellent results which are suitable for the food packaging industry are due to the formidable devolatilising performance of the MRS extruder. This is achieved by means of an extremely large polymer melt surface area in the multiple rotation section of the extruder, together with a rapid melt exchange and optimised venting. Many trials together with tests on products manufactured under production conditions prove that this excellent devolatilisation takes place together with gentle material treatment and a very low IV drop. The MRS extruder permits the production of high quality products with low energy costs and with minimised maintenance and operator attention, not to mention the high production flexibility the system offers.
