Veolia will close its MultiPet and Multiport GmbH plastic recycling plants in Bernburg by the end of 2025. This decision is a consequence of the ongoing challenging market conditions in the plastic recycling industry. Veolia will support the 122 affected employees in any way possible.

“From our Bernburg sites, we supply customers throughout Europe with recycled HDPE and PET plastics,” explains Guido Adomßent, CEO of Veolia Umweltservice. "The high cost of processing plastic waste and persistently low prices for primary plastics have fundamentally impacted the profitability of these sites. They can no longer be operated economically under the current conditions."

Multiport GmbH, founded in 1991, and MultiPet GmbH, founded in 2001, are key players in the recycling of HDPE and PET plastic waste. They have been an important part of the Veolia Group in Germany since 2017. Bernburg, with a capacity of around 70,000 tons per year, was one of the largest plastic processing sites in Europe.

Veolia will negotiate with the relevant works council to determine the extent to which we can offer jobs at other Veolia companies that align with individuals' qualifications and personal circumstances.

“Despite this development, we remain committed to the circular economy,” Adomßent emphasizes. "The sorting and pre-treatment of plastics, as well as shredding and trading, will continue to be central to our operations. Our sorting plants play an important role in the recycling chain, and precise separation creates the foundation for high-quality recycling."

Material flows are being redirected to other Veolia sites, primarily in the Netherlands and France. Veolia is increasing its deliveries from Germany to these recycling plants so they can better secure their capacity.

Looking ahead, Veolia Germany plans to further expand its successful PET recycling business in Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland. The company is investing in the digitalization and efficiency of its facilities, as well as strengthening its partnerships with local authorities and industrial partners.
