thyssenkrupp Uhde signed a Letter of Intent together with KÖKSAN for the delivery of two polymer plants in Türkiye and Iraq

Dortmund, Germany

  • Environmentally friendly Melt-To-Resin (MTR®) technology

  • Up to 30 % less carbon footprint from fuel and electrical energy

thyssenkrupp Uhde’s subsidiary Uhde Inventa-Fischer has signed a Letter of Intent with the Türkiye packaging producer KÖKSAN for the delivery of two PET production plants. The first plant will be located in Gaziantep, Turkiye, and the second one – together with Al Mutahida Packaging – in Babylon, Iraq. Each production line will have a capacity of 324,000 tons of PET resin per year, suitable for all kinds of packaging applications and bulk continuous filament (BCF) production. Completion and commissioning are planned for 2027 and 2028, respectively.

The plants will utilize the patented Melt-To-Resin (MTR®) process by thyssenkrupp Uhde’s subsidiary, Uhde Inventa-Fischer. With this investment, KÖKSAN aims to strengthen its market position both domestically and across the region. The various grades of PET resin produced will be supplied to local markets as well as to countries in the Middle East,  the Americas, Europe, and Africa.

Nadja Håkansson, CEO of thyssenkrupp Uhde: “We are very proud that KÖKSAN and Al Mutahida Packaging have chosen us to build two more state-of-the-art PET plants. Our well-proven MTR® process demonstrates that our technologies deliver economic and environmental advantages at the same time, combining reduced energy consumption and higher yield with lower CAPEX and OPEX. thyssenkrupp Uhde’s scope includes the license, basic and detail engineering, and supply of all major plant equipment. In addition, the operating personnel of KÖKSAN is going to be trained by the specialists from thyssenkrupp Uhde.”

M. Murat Kökoğlu, CEO of KÖKSAN: “We are very happy to announce these further projects together with Uhde Inventa-Fischer, as already the first and second production line in Gaziantep deliver excellent performance and product quality continuously.”

Economic and environmental advantages

The MTR® process developed by thyssenkrupp Uhde is a continuous polycondensation process that obviates the need for the solid-state-post-condensation process steps in the production of PET resin. This results in substantial energy savings, reduced investment, lower operating and maintenance costs and a higher raw material yield compared to conventional technologies. The technology meets today’s demand for sustainability by reducing the carbon footprint in terms of fuel and electrical energy by up to 30 percent. The process is based on the 2-reactor technology, which uses the patented ESPREE and DISCAGE reactors to obtain the desired high melt viscosities.
