New pennaHOLT Enables Custom-Design of High Opacity PET Packages with Lowest Ever Levels of TiO2

As momentum is building for PET in Liquid Dairy Products and Home & Personal Care segments, technical requirements for package opacity range from hiding fill line to guaranteeing extended shelf life. pennaHOLTTM, Penn Color’s new high opacity masterbatch, gets ahead of the consumers and industry expectations to improve recyclability and support usage of recycled opaque PET, by reducing TiO2 content. The synergistic composition of pennaHOLTTM exploits the effect of orientation and dissimilar refractive indices to achieves superior light blocking performance, whiteness and special effects, with at least 40% less TiO2 than conventional masterbatches.

Holcomer Circulaire: An Innovative Solution for Sustainable Opaque PET Packaging

Moving towards a circular economy in packaging is a clear trend. Players in the value chain of food packaging are taking various measures and are working towards sustainable solutions. Legislation and regulations are also being changed by governments to trigger this.

For example, disruption of the recycling process caused by opaque PET has become a problem in France. The use of white opaque PET bottles for UHT milk has rapidly increased over the years. This has an impact on the ability to recycle collected PET packaging. To increase the recycleability of these bottles, the French government introduced a new regulation, affecting PET packaging with mineral opacifiers. A 100% increase of the environmental fee is applied to opaque PET bottles that contain a content of > 4% mineral opacifiers.

In close cooperation with our French customers Holland Colors has developed and patented an opacifying concept for monolayer bottles that provides the same opacity and bottle quality as the current standard with a mineral loading in the final bottle of less than 4%. The product based on this concept, Holcomer Circulaire, will be officially introduced by the end of 2018.

Husky Injection Molding Systems

Multi-Layer Technology – Unlocking Sustainable Packaging Possibilities with Injection Molding Technology

For over 60 years, Husky has been a pioneer and leader in the injection molding industry. The development of novel and innovative technologies has allowed Husky to continuously deliver products and services that meet customers’ needs and exceed commitments. Increasingly, our customers are asking for more sustainable solutions that still deliver productivity and performance. This presentation will highlight some of the efforts that the injection molding industry as a whole, and Husky in particular, are undertaking to drive increasingly sustainable solutions, while improving costs, quality and design freedom. Examples discussed will include Husky solutions that support Reduce, Re-use, Recycle (i.e. lightweighting of bottles, threads and closures); and recyclable barrier materials and recycled flake system solutions. Additionally, we will highlight a recent case study from Brazil where the brand owner, converter and recycler collaborated to create a closed-loop process for plastic dairy applications.
