France bans plastic packaging for fresh fruit and vegetables

0:25 min Global themesEurope

From January 1, 2022, around thirty fresh, unprocessed fruit and vegetables will no longer be sold in plastic packaging.

The participating ministries are thus implementing the law on waste control and recycling management of February 2020. In this way, more than a billion plastic packaging is to be eliminated every year.

The decree includes a step-by-step implementation of this ban. All types of fruit and vegetables will be sold without plastic packaging by 2026 at the latest.

The decree, published on October 12, 2021, results from broad consultation of stakeholders, economic actors, and civil society representatives.
