petcore approves the use of up to 10% of Futura’s BarPET/BeerPET pet/ptn alloy based on bottles in a recycle stream for bottle to bottle applications

Futura is a producer of BarPET/BeerPET, a PET/PTN Alloy containing 10% PTN1.BarPET/BeerPET has been developed to enhance thermal stability and further improve gas, UV and water vapour barrier properties of PET packaging. The BarPET/BeerPET solution is targeted mainly at products requiring an extended barrier protection from CO2 loss or oxygen ingress such as soft drinks and beer.Bottles made with this material composition have been tested following the Petcore bottle-tobottle protocol2. The bottle stream tested contained up to 25% of clear, monolayer barrier bottles based on BarPET/BeerPET.Petcore’s Expert Evaluation Committee, whose mission is to determine the impact of new PET containers and additives on the quality of the recovered PET flake for recycling, has come to the conclusion (taking into consideration local accumulation effects) that Futura’s BarPET/BeerPET technology for gas barrier enhancement will have no negative impact on current European PET recycling at levels of up to 10% of the bottle stream.Petcore recognises the need for innovation. It is also recognised, however, that the introduction of barrier systems is cumulative in the recycle stream. In the event that the introduction of a specific new barrier system or too great a concentration of older barrier materials has an adverse affect on the quality of the resulting RPET (eg colour/haze), Petcore reserves the right to re-test and re-evaluate its position with regard to technology approval.1 PTN stands for Poly Trimethylene Naphthalate (a food-approved resin produced from NDC & 1.3 Propadeniol – PDO).2 August 2005
