Husky Injection Molding Systems today announced the beginning of a phased launch approach of its PET preform barrier module, built on the industry-leading HyPET® HPP5 platform. Husky is continually looking for opportunities to support the growth of its customers by providing integrated solutions that offer the lowest total cost to produce, freedom in packaging design, and significantly reduced operational and product safety risks. The introduction of Husky’s multi-layer barrier technology offers manufacturers new possibilities to explore PET as a packaging material for products requiring enhanced barrier properties. With the HyPET® HPP5 barrier module, packaging manufacturers have the freedom of design to distinguish products for maximum shelf appeal, in ways that were previously impossible.

With the highest ever system capability, Husky can produce multi-layer preforms with a wide range of barrier content, even below 3%, while delivering up to 50% savings on barrier material costs for some applications and increasing system availability. This delivers maximum flexibility, allowing for freedom of design both across and within applications to customize how much barrier content is used. Being able to precisely dose barrier content and adjust the range within an application successfully ensures that seasonal variations are considered with relation to the shelf life of a sensitive product. By providing the packaging community with an integrated solution for PET preforms that offers more flexible material properties for enhanced package design and performance, Husky allows customers to consider a more attractive option over alternative materials such as high-density polyethylene (HDPE), cartons, metal, and even glass.

“By providing a highly capable and integrated system with barrier capability, we can offer our customers the flexibility and innovative technology they need to successfully grow their business in existing markets, or explore new market opportunities,” said Robert Domodossola, Husky’s Vice President of Engineering and Business Development. “With our barrier technology, our customers can now consider PET as a viable packaging material for a greater variety of products, and still take advantage of the industry’s fastest, most capable and reliable, integrated injection molding solution.”

Husky’s multi-layer preform technology is built on the industry-leading HyPET® HPP5 platform, meaning there are no requirements for special tooling or equipment. Packages can be blown and filled on existing lines, making Husky’s barrier technology a drop-in solution that still benefits from all future advancements to the HyPET® HPP technology. Delivering equal or better shelf life as blended additives, at an improved cost and with additional flexibility, Husky’s barrier technology provides the ability to unlock new market opportunities. With an increased capability to precisely distribute barrier material through an advanced melt delivery system and enhanced controls, Husky’s co-injection solution offers the best combination of flexibility, productivity, and lowest total cost to produce.
