Belfast City Half Marathon going greener with Deep RiverRock

Belfast, United Kingdom

Deep RiverRock, title sponsor of the Belfast City Marathon and Half Marathon events, are becoming the first major water brand, distributing across the island of Ireland, to produce a 100% recycled bottle. Event organisers for the 2019 Deep RiverRock Belfast City Half Marathon are delighted to confirm this will be their first event to include 100% recycled bottles at all water stations and finish area - hydrating over 5,000 participants on Sunday 22nd September 2019.

In addition to now being made from 100% recycled PET plastic, Deep RiverRock’s bottles are still 100% recyclable. Belfast City Marathon and Half Marathon events will therefore ensure that an extensive clean-up operation takes place after each event, with all bottles being sent for recycling once again.

Deep RiverRock’s investment in recycled PET supports a circular economy, keeping resources in use for as long as possible. Recycled PET bottles are also one of the lowest carbon-dense packaging types to produce within the beverage sector.

The move truly supports the brand’s commitment to protect the environment and to play a value-adding role in communities and community events such as the Belfast City Marathon and Half Marathon.

Deep RiverRock is committed to encouraging consumers to recycle all PET bottles. In a bold statement, Deep RiverRock has recycled their logo on all bottles with an impactful ‘100% Recycled Bottle’ message front-of-pack. The move aims to inspire more responsible disposal of waste and greater recycling among consumers. It is supported by recycling messages which have already been integrated on the bottle cap and across TV advertising.

Tara O’Rourke, Head of Coca-Cola HBC Brand Marketing said,

“We are proud to support Belfast City Marathon and Half Marathon events in a more sustainable way, proudly introducing our 100% recycled bottle range to the event for the first time in 2019. These much-loved events offer a fantastic opportunity to bring our sustainability message to the local community, and we hope to leverage our long-standing partnership with Belfast City Marathon to further inspire recycling and the responsible disposal of waste.”

Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon and Half Marathon events have further plans in place to “Go Greener” which include 100% compostable and biodegradable cups for PowerAde at their two Energy Drinks Stations this September.

The 7th Deep RiverRock Belfast City Half Marathon takes place on Sunday 22nd September 2019 with a record year of over 5,000 taking part. The event starts on Ormeau Embankment at 9am and finishes in Ormeau Park around 12 noon.
