CCL Label: Innovative Shrink Sleeve solution approved by EPBP / Enabling PET bottle-to-bottle recycling

CCL Labelcreated the cutting-edge TD Shrink Sleeve material EcoFloat™, enabling the packaging industry to meet their recycling targets and to support sustainability. This material has now been approved by the European PET Bottle Platform (EPBP).

CCL Label, the global supply chain leader of innovative premium packaging and comprehensive label solutions, created the cutting-edge TD Shrink Sleeve material EcoFloat™, enabling the packaging industry to meet their recycling targets and to support sustainability. This material has now been approved by the European PET Bottle Platform (EPBP).

The EPBP is a voluntary industry initiative that provides PET bottle design guidelines for recycling, evaluates PET bottle packaging solutions and technologies and facilitates understanding of the effects of new PET bottle innovations on recycling processes. Based on the EPBP assessment’s outcome and current market’s knowledge in 2020, the EPBP concludes that CCL polyolefin film EcoFloat™ will not have a negative impact on current European PET recycling provided it is used under defined conditions. Please refer to the enclosed endorsement for full details.

“Meeting the EPBP standards was very important to us at CCL as those reflect the performance of our material under real-life conditions and is regarded as important certificate for our customers  ,” says Norbert Fenkart (Head of Research&Development, CCL Label). “EcoFloat™  was designed to meet economic and environmental sustainability goals while enhancing the look and feel of the product – with maximum cost-efficiency.

The EcoFloat™ material complies with all CCL conformity standards and has been engineered to improve the sink/float separation process for PET bottle recycling.. „It means that after shredding the PET bottles, the shrink sleeve parts are completely separated from the bottle flakes during the recycling process. As the PET bottle flakes sink to the bottom and the shrink sleeve pieces float on top, the two materials can then be separated into two different material streams on to their next life. Especially for the PET bottle this enables circularity – in the bottle-to-bottle recycling process,“ Fenkart adds.

EcoFloat™ Sleeves were also rated „Very Good“ by environmental services provider Interseroh‘s recognized rating standard „Made for Recycling“. Certificates are available for Full-Body Sleeves on PET bottles, HDPE bottles and PP Cups. More varieties are currently being tested.

„We have developed a holistic plan at CCL that goes beyond conservation and aims to deliver value,“ explains Günther Birkner, President Food & Beverage worldwide CCL Labels. „We are investing in resource saving technologies and waste reducing processes at our facilities worldwide. By focusing on engineering with more efficient manufacturing, we can offer our customers the best solutions to meet their sustainable packaging needs – one great example being our latest development EcoFloat.“

With high performing 360° sleeves, CCL offers endless possibilities of sleeve design and strong visual impact at the point of sale (POS). Utilizing the established expertise in the field of film manufacturing, CCL has developed a solution to support customers’ sustainability targets.

EcoFloat™ as a Shrink Sleeve material compliments the innovative range of sustainable CCL Label product family such as EcoStream and EcoSolve for Pressure Sensitive Labels.
