IRD - Infrared Rotary Drum
Heating. Drying. Crystallizing. Coating.
The range of applications of the IRD is nearly unlimited. The IRD is used for crystallizing and drying virgin or regrind materials for a series of plastics, such as ABS, EVA, HDPE, PC, PEEK, PET, PLA, PPS, PTFE, TPE, and TPU. Through the use of the continuously functioning IRD, the need for energy-intensive processing using dry air is completely eliminated, easily resulting in energy savings averaging 30%.
PET Decontamination for direct food contact packaging.
With the IR-CLEAN system, KREYENBORG offers an attractive and cost-effective alternative For the direct reprocessing of PET post-consumer flakes for food packaging - without using any vacuum technology and as a retrofit solution for existing extrusion lines. The efficiency of the cleaning process has been verified by a Letter of Non-Objection from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Similarly, several challenge tests have demonstrated compliance with the criteria established by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) for the use of recycled materials for direct food contact packaging.

Odor reduction in HDPE Recycling and various plastics
The combination of a continuous operating IRD and an IR-Fresh finisher is used to reduce odors and VOCs from recycled materials like HDPE but also for virgin materials like Thermoplastic Elastomers TPEs. Driving force is here again the IRD with its fast heat transfer to the material and the large surface area combined with the permanent exchange of the surface due to the excellent mixing behaviour of the rotating drum. This results in a short and effective pre-treatment of the materials before residence time and heat is applied in the IRFresh Finisher to achieve the final deodorisation.
The IR-Fresh process can be applied on recycled flake material before an extrusion / recycling line but also after the extrusion and pelletizing process to treat pellets and granules.
Continuous crystallization and drying of PET in minutes instead of hours with significantly lower energy consumption.
This continuously operating system dries PET within 7-10 minutes. Focus here is specifically on applications in extrusion of plastic films and fibers with degassing extruders (twin-screw, planetary- and multi-screw-extruders). Varying levels of input moisture that results in process fluctuations in the extrusion process (as well as fluctuations in end-product quality) can be eliminated with the KREYENBORG PET-BOOSTER®.
CRYSTALLIZING & DRYING
The IR-Batch is used as a dryer, crystallizer or for material heating of small to medium throughputs. The stainless steel rotary drum is filled via a pneumatic shut-off valve and the bulk material is heated by the internal infrared module. The mixing elements in the rotary drum are adapted to the bulk material and ensure a good mixing. The machine’s drum is emptied by reversing the direction of rotation. The IR module including the accessories is mounted on a sliding frame. This frame is pulled out for cleaning and maintenance purposes, allowing easy and quick access to the rotary drum and IR module. The exhaust air is discharged from the rotary drum via a blower. The installed Siemens S7 PLC control has the flexibility for setting residence time, mixing and temperature profile.
