SMI: Stay at home and production adapts to consumption

SMI S.p.A. San Giovanni Bianco (BG), Italy

In these weeks marked by the Coronavirus emergency, large-scale retail sales have increased compared to the same period of 2019 (Source: Nielsen). The categories of products that are the most involved are the ones related to the trend to stock up on food and beverages, to focus on prevention and health through the purchase of detergents and soap and to stay at home, which has generated a great increase in the consumption of basic foodstuffs.

Many food and beverage manufacturers are planning to convert production and logistics in order to be ready to change production lines according to the new consumption patterns and ensure at the same time the compliance with the rules in force in the plants.

For instance, consumers' buying habits in the points of sale of large-scale retail trade focused before the virus on small formats, while now, considering that people are staying at home longer, preferences have shifted to bigger formats; therefore, production processes of agrifood companies have to become more flexible in order to adapt as quickly as possible to new market demands.

A great competitive advantage in this process of adaption is represented by the possibility to have flexible and versatile machines within production plants, like the new SMI automatic palletizing systems for the tertiary packaging of beverages, food, chemical and pharmaceutical products, that are able to:

  • quickly adapt the production to new formats required by the market, with palletizing patterns optimized for the truck loading
  • reduce the time for format changeover
  • improve the handling of containers and avoid damages
  • increase performance with reduced dimensions
